Thursday’s Children 4.25: Inspired by the “Better” Half

CAUTION: Extreme Mush Alert!!!

This doesn’t happen with me often. I promise. But since today is a special occasion, I’m gonna take a second to be wildly romantic (not to mention gooey) and post something that probably won’t appeal to most people.

(I hope it doesn’t come off as braggy or obnoxious, but if it does I truly apologize. Also, if it makes you feel better, you can always go trolling through my archives for entries between 2005-2006 when I was single, heartbroken and bitter. Those are always good for a laugh.)

That said, I think I might be one of the LUCKIEST people alive. Here’s why:

Jake & Veronica – April, 2008

Five years ago, I married the love of my life.

By most people’s standards, we got hitched at an embarrassingly young age, before either of us had really done anything worth talking about in the world. We hadn’t done all that much traveling, or figured out what careers we wanted to pursue with any kind of certainty…and we definitely weren’t ready to raise anything more demanding than a plastic cactus. (Actually, we still aren’t. But our cat seems to be thriving, so that’s probably a good sign.)

But as it turned out, none of that mattered, because we were able to strike out into the world and do all of those things together. As a team.

That’s what makes me so lucky. I don’t just get to be married to a super cute guy. I also get to spend the rest of my life with my best friend, my favorite companion in mischief; a guy who laughs at (and gets even the most bizarre variations of) my jokes, brings me fountain Diet Coke and Bajio chimichangas whenever availability permits, and who claims he actually enjoys rubbing my feet. I get to spend my days wondering what I did to deserve this, while writing stories about girls who just can’t seem to find that one true guy. (While fleecing unsuspecting marks and battling serial killers, of course.)

Speaking of which, he’s the first person to read every story I write, and no matter how clunky the narration or shallow the characterization, he always tells me it’s good. He’s a liar, of course, but that’s what makes him such a great “alpha reader.” It also makes him a terrible taste-tester, because he’ll eat pretty much anything I make. (And I’ve committed some pretty disgusting culinary crimes, I assure you.)

That’s pretty much the point of today’s Thursday’s Children post. Gratitude for the people who support us (and let’s face it, put up with our writerly mood swings). And the importance of finding that person who loves you unconditionally, and who always believes that you’ll succeed, no matter what. (Even if it’s just you.)

And they all lived happily ever after.

The End

    1. Honestly, I think feet are creepy. I don’t think I’ll ever understand people who like them.

  1. This is great post and reminder. I know we have to go through a lot of Mr. Wrongs before meeting Mr R. I love how you say you’re a Team. I’ve come to realize that’s what has kept me and my partner of 18 years, and two tween-agers together, is that we’re a team.
And he still rubs my feet. –when I wimper. 🙂

  2. When we got married, my husband and I got our whole wedding party baseball jerseys that said Team BruDan. Being a team is so, so important and it’s great to have an in-house alpha reader who has your back. Lucky gal! Sounds like he’s a keeper. 😉
    Love it, Veronica! Happy Anniversary!

  3. Happy 5th anniversary, Veronica to you and your husband! 🙂

I’m lucky that my husband (married 5 years next month and been together 12 years) is my best friend too and he supports me unconditionally with my writing. Being a team and working together makes life’s challenges easier and the good things so much better.

  4. I’m married to my soul mate…but we’re old-er! LOL! Six years this June. We even write and work together. Never thought THAT could happen. It can. He also reads and edits for me although my books aren’t his kind of thing.
    Congrats to you!
