Take it like a Goat, Dude!

I’ve always thought the expression “take it like a man” was a hilarious one. Not because I’m super feminist or anything (though, to be fair, I did start a club in college called Manhaters Anonymous…about a year before I broke down and married one of them), or because men (at least the ones I know) are usually big fat whiners whenever they get so much as a seasonal sniffle, but because–as a race–mankind has traditionally been portrayed as a very fragile, angry and volatile thing.

For example, look at the literature that’s supposed to tell us about ourselves as a civilization. Homer’s Iliad, for example. Several countries went to war and razed an entire city because some dude’s wife told him, “I’m just not that into you.”

Or in The Prince, by Machiavelli, we learn that the best man is the one who figures out how much bad stuff he has to do in order to get what he wants. Then he has to do all the bad at once, so at least he can get it over with. In essence, “burn it all down, but do it quickly so you can get back to being awesome.”

And don’t even get me STARTED on all the ridiculous shenanigans that happen in The Bible!

Basically, my point is that when life hands us bad weather…bad news…bad jobs…rejected queries… maybe we shouldn’t try to take it like a man. Maybe we should be more like goats, and just fall down until the bad parts are over.

If you don’t think that’s a better way of handling things, just watch this video. Not only does it seem like a super efficient method for handling stress; it’s also hilarious.
